Lighting Studio Portraits

A feature length training video in capturing striking studio style portraits by Damien Lovegrove

Learn how to light beautiful studio portraits

Lighting Studio Portraits will inform and teach photographers the most important technical skills in lighting and capturing striking studio style portraits.

Damien will take you through the step by step process of how he shoots studio portraits. From where to position the lighting, which camera settings he uses, how to best compose shots and what additional accessories may work to enhance the quality of the image. Each chapter ends with the photographs and a summary of the exact settings used to create them.

It’s important to realise that you do not need an actual studio to appreciate the invaluable content on this training video. Damien explains from the start how you can create your ‘studio’ anywhere! The right type of lighting and a simple background is all you need to produce ‘studio-style’ portraits.

By the end of the tutorial you will have the technical knowledge, understanding and creative confidence to reproduce the same shots for your own clients.

Reviews

Picked up this video a couple of weeks ago (via download option) and I love it! Broken down into bite size videos of each shoot Damien takes the time to thoroughly explain techniques used and why he uses them. He literally shows what light and shadow he is looking for and where he wants it. His enthusiasm and love for photography also shines through and that makes the videos even better. This is a great resource and one I know I will be returning to again and again.

If Carlsberg did studio lighting vids they’d still have to employ Damien Lovegrove to make it!

I only ever buy one trainer’s videos so I’ve just got Damien Lovegrove’s new studio lighting video. Invigorating viewing.

I think you are a wonderful photographer but you are also an extremely good teacher. There are many great photographers but far fewer great teachers. I am a novice photographer only shooting a few years now. I have a passion for it though and I study the craft constantly. I have been mentored by several top notch professional photographers and although I did learn from the experiences, I learned more solid information from you after the first part of your tutorial than I did from several all-day photo-shoot sessions with these other top professionals. Thank you for presenting such important information in such a concise and clear presentation. I will forever be your student. Thanks.

Thanks Damien – this is easily the best studio training video I have come across I cannot wait to try out some new techniques. Thanks, watched one chapter and it’s just what I was looking for.

We recommend that you download one part at a time to help reduce the chance of a connection failure, resulting in incomplete files.

From here you can synchronise the files with your smart devices in the usual way. For seemless viewing of chapters/parts we recommend you create a new playlist in iTunes, drag in all the video chapters/parts and then synchronise the playlist to your device.

Please don’t attempt to download the videos directly onto your tablet/phone. You’ll need to download the files onto your desktop or laptop computer first.

Quicktime support for PC users

You may have read about Apple ceasing support of Quicktime software for Windows users. PC users have also been encouraged to delete the Quicktime application from their computers for fear of potential security risks. We would also highly recommend PC users delete Quicktime as soon as possible.

Whilst our videos may state they are Quicktime files, they are actually H.264 encoded MPEG-4 files that should play perfectly fine within many other media players and pose zero security threat in themselves. VLC is a popular free media player that plays .mov files. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Damien Lovegrove

Damien Lovegrove is a world renowned portrait photographer and Fujifilm UK ambassador. He has been a TV cameraman, a commercial photographer, a wedding and portrait photographer and now he is a writer, columnist, teacher, motivator and artist.

He went to the BBC at the age of 19 and trained for three years to be a cameraman, going on to train as a Lighting Director, and leaving the BBC in 1998 to become a full time photographer.

He now specialises in making women look fabulous.

“I’m inspired by beauty and as I have matured as a photographer I’ve learned to see beauty in just about everyone and everywhere. It’s not what I look at that matters, it is what I see.”

“Being a good portrait photographer requires key traits like having integrity, fun, respectfulness and a personable character. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30s that I began to gain that all important confidence needed to hone these skills, and I shot my first portrait in 1996 at the age of 32.”

“Some of the leading photographers I met early in my career had confidence and craft skills in bucket loads, but somehow they lost the desire or focus to really push themselves to greatness, and they fell by the wayside. It takes continual practice and improvement to get the most from photography and there are many obstacles along the way to overcome.”

“The secret of making consistently good photographs is to stay inspired and be passionate about photography. Inspiration fuels the learning of new techniques, and passion generates the motivation needed to continually practice.”
