Friday 8th December

In this one-day masterclass workshop, Damien Lovegrove will demonstrate his unique way of using continuous lighting and flash to make fabulous studio portraits.

There will not be a light meter in sight, instead, Damien will show you how to use your eyes to assess the exposure, tonal balance and visual impact of the image. Each of you in turn will be shooting our professional model under the guidance of Damien’s keen eye. High key, low key, hard light, soft light. Expect to capture a full repertoire of lighting styles and image looks all created in-camera in this feature-rich workshop.

This Studio Lighting workshop is led by Damien Lovegrove. The event date is  Friday 8th September at Sint-Katelijne-Waver, near Mechelen, Belgium.

We have comprehensive use of the well equiped studio owned by Ivan Deleus. Refreshments and a light lunch are also included so we can relax and enjoy our day.

Is this for me? Don’t worry if you do not have extensive knowledge of shooting portraits, after all, you are here to learn. As long as you are comfortable working in manual mode and can change the ISO, shutter speed and aperture independently on your camera you will be fine on this workshop. I will share my settings as we go and help you dial in the settings that suit your taste.

I will provide all the lighting equipment that we will use during the shoot. We will be using a selection of light sources from Lupolux, Amaran and Godox. We might even get to use my smoke machine 🙂

Lenses: I will be using one zoom lens and two prime lenses. My zoom is the equivalent of 24-50mm on full-frame and the prime lenses are both telephoto and are the equivalent of 63mm and 85mm on full-frame. If you have a monopod and are comfortable using it then feel free to bring one, If you are used to working with a tripod feel free to bring it. If your lenses have OIS or VR, or your camera body IBIS or anti-shake, then you will not need a monopod or tripod.

This workshop takes place in a decent sized studio and will give us the fredom to be creative with our lighting and framing. The skills learned on this event can translate to portraiture both on location and in your own studio. Limited to just 5 photographers, the opportunities during the shooting sessions will ensure that the day will flow really well. This is a classic Lovegrove workshop that has been fine tuned and evolved over the years.

I took these photographs of Leontine on a recent one day workshop in Mechelen. We will be shooting these styles and more on the day.

Damien Lovegrove

I aim to be kind, sharing and patient. I take care to communicate in a way that reaches every level. I won’t leave you struggling if you are lost in camera menus and I won’t ignore you if you are quietly getting great photographs. What I’ll do is to show you how to build rapport and communicate with our model to make structured poses look quite relaxed and natural. Nothing is left to chance. Everything has a purpose and I’ll share with you how I style each shot. I have an understanding of light that I’m well known for and I’ll teach you how I see the light. Once you know what to look for everything becomes easier. Without the constrains of having to create ‘natural’ looks we can really push the boat out and use flash or continuous light in a striking and vibrant way.

Reviews from previous participants of Damien Lovegrove’s workshops

What can I say?

The day with Damien was amazing, full of information on lighting and set-ups with a stunning model who was very professional indeed. Discovering useful shooting locations that I would never have thought would work through to camera and technique advice I found the whole experience absorbing and entertaining in equal measure.

Some of my images taken on the day are my best to date and I will most certainly be investing in the simple lighting set-up that Damien was using on the day. Can’t wait to put some of what I have learnt into practice.

Think my next aim is to spend some time with Damien in his studio or learning about multiple lighting set-ups and working with a model in a studio environment.

Five stars are not enough, ten would be more like it!

I love Damien’s work so to get the opportunity to spend a day in Bristol passing on his knowledge was a dream. A brilliant day, took me out of my comfort zone and came away with new ideas for urban photography. Would definitely recommend a day with Damien and would do it again if the opportunity arises. Definitely 5*

An absolutely outstanding day spent with Damien and model Veronique on Urban Portraits. The shoot was not rushed and every one of our small group was given ample time to get their shots in the bag. Damien’s style of teaching is second to none, and his ability to impart knowledge in a totally relaxed manner means that you walk away, with a great understanding of what you’ve learned. Some of my long-standing lighting “theories” were turned on their head, and the quality of the resulting images were just stunning. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has a genuine desire to take their outdoor portraits to the next level, you will be delighted with what you can achieve.

I had waited a long time to be able to attend one of Damiens workshops. From the moment I signed up I was impressed by the speed of response and the care and attention to detail in the pre-workshop communications and the day itself was very well organised and executed to ensure we got the maximum benefit from our day and Damien is so enthusiastic. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Brilliant day produced by a profession enthusiastic and passionate photographer. Damien makes it so easy to get interested in the subject he is teaching. He is patient and helpful throughout the day and I have ended up with some great photos of the day. The small team of 5 was ideal for the shoot and it was great to associate with such a nice group. I cannot finish without complimenting DL on the choice of model (Veronique). She was beautiful and most of all very accommodating letting us get our shots in, nothing was too much trouble for her. I am now asking myself why it took me to long to engage with Damien and look forward to our next meet.
